Mr Moti

A short story

Rahad Abir is a writer from Bangladesh. His work has appeared in The Los Angeles Review, The Bombay Literary Magazine, The Wire, Himal Southasian, Brick Lane Tales anthology, and elsewhere. He has an MFA from Boston University. He received the 2017-18 Charles Pick Fellowship at the University of East Anglia. Currently he is working on his first novel and a short story collection.

Ameen is seventeen when the war breaks out. One Monday, after dinner, he announces he will go to war.

Sonavan shrieks in surprise. "You want to leave me alone?"

"It won't take long, Ma," he assures her. "I'll be back soon after the training."

That night, Sonavan cannot sleep.

After sunup, she opens the duck coop. The flock streams out, stretches, and quacks around her for the morning meal. She takes longer than usual. She mixes water with rice husks in an earthen bowl and puts it down. They gobble it up in five minutes and head for the pond.
