Work with Us:
Social Media Associate/Manager
The Role
Himal Southasian is looking for a Social Media Associate/Manager to help our journalism reach new audiences across social media platforms. We’re looking for someone who is genuinely plugged into social media – who understands emerging trends, platform-specific best practices, what gets audiences engaged – and who cares about serious Southasian journalism reaching a wider audience.
The role will work closely with our social media lead to support daily publishing, video distribution and cross-platform promotion.
We welcome candidates at different career stages. Title and compensation will be commensurate with experience.
What You’ll Do
- Turn daily stories, newsletters, podcasts and interviews into clear, compelling social posts that make people want to click through
- Pull strong quotes, key findings and sharp lines directly from our stories and podcasts to use as post copy and hooks
- Post consistently and adapt every post to fit the platform it’s going out on, including optimising for social search across Instagram, X, Facebook, LinkedIn, Threads and Bluesky, with possible expansion into Reddit and TikTok as well
- Determine posting schedules to reach audiences across different regions and time zones
- Support the social rollout for major stories, investigations and planned moments like elections, anniversaries and long-running series, while keeping a rapid-response slot open for developing news
- Work to develop audience and engagement on YouTube, optimizing long-form and short-form video content, expanding channel reach and growing channel membership
- Run structured tests on hooks, formats, posting times and thumbnails, and stay on top of platform trends to bring new ideas to the team
- Track post performance and overall reach, including UTM tracking tied to newsletter signups and conversions, and share results with the team regularly
- Monitor comments and engagement, flagging anything that needs a response or escalation, and turn comment spaces into active channels of audience engagement
What We're Looking For
- Relevant experience in social media management, audience growth or a related field
- Knowledge of native platform tools: Meta Business Suite, YouTube Studio, X Analytics, LinkedIn Analytics, and a scheduling tool (Buffer, Hootsuite, Later, Sprout, or similar)
- Familiarity with Canva, Capcut or Adobe Express
- A record of growing reach or engagement, with the numbers to show it
- Strong and clear writing, especially for hooks and short-form copy
- Good organisation skills and the ability to manage a busy publishing schedule
- Ability to review performance analytics and draw practical insights
- Comfort operating independently while also working in harmony with a small team of hardworking colleagues
- Commitment to our reader-supported model and approach to independent regional journalism
Nice to Have
- Experience in digital publishing, journalism, cultural or media organisations
- Experience posting on Reddit and navigating subreddit rules
Himal’s team members operate remotely from their respective bases across the region, with regular online communications following Southasian working hours.
The position is open to all nationalities. Candidates from marginalised social groups are encouraged to apply, and may, if they wish, briefly describe their background in their cover letter. To apply, send your CV along with two professional references; a 300-word note on your relevant experience; a brief note reviewing Himal’s current social media strategy; and a brief note proposing a one-year plan to grow Himal’s YouTube audience and engagement (especially channel membership). Send completed applications to careers@himalmag.com with the subject line “<your name> – Social Media Associate / Manager 2026”.
Shortlisted candidates should expect a test and an interview. Applications will be processed on a rolling basis, and evaluations will begin from 15 October.
Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted.
Audience and Membership Associate/Manager
The Role
Himal Southasian is a reader-supported publication, and our Patron (membership/subscription) programme is core to how we sustain our journalism. We're looking for someone to join the Himal team as an Audience and Membership Associate/Manager and focus on the day-to-day work of engaging our audience and growing paid membership.
Working closely with our audience team, the Audience and Membership Associate/Manager will make sure our audience outreach, campaigns, membership systems and Patron communications run smoothly and consistently.
We welcome candidates at different career stages. Title and compensation will be commensurate with experience.
What You’ll Do
- Plan and send audience communications and campaigns – building newsletters and send schedules, segmenting lists, and double-checking every detail before each send goes out – with a focus on growing paid membership
- Administer Patron perks, making sure paying members receive what their tier includes – merchandise, gift memberships, event invites and similar benefits
- Oversee our automated member lifecycle flows – payment recovery, renewal reminders and welcome sequences – monitoring performance and adjusting timing, messaging and triggers as needed
- Respond to Patron questions and communications about their accounts, billing or benefits, and identify friction points across the signup, paywall and broader audience funnel
- Support efforts to find, win and retain institutional subscribers, including tracking usage and engagement across institutional accounts
- Keep audience records accurate and up-to-date, and put together regular reports on signup, conversion and retention trends
- Contribute ideas for growing our audience and paid membership, working with the team to test and refine new approaches
- Test and evaluate new tools as needs arise, and help document our internal processes so things stay consistent as the team grows
- Assist with website upkeep and uploading, including for editorial content, as required
What We're Looking For
- Relevant experience in digital media, audience growth, subscriptions, operations or a related field
- Understanding of subscription businesses, including customer acquisition, retention and revenue optimisation
- Familiarity with analytics platforms, CRM systems and digital marketing performance metrics
- Strong attention to detail and a commitment to accuracy
- Strong and clear written and spoken communication
- Good organisation and the ability to manage a busy workload
- Comfort operating independently while also working in harmony with a small team of hardworking colleagues
- Commitment to our reader-supported model and approach to independent regional journalism
Nice to Have
- Experience in digital publishing, journalism or media organisations
- Experience in subscription or membership businesses
- Familiarity with marketing and audience engagement strategies
