Editorial intern
The Role:
The Editorial intern will report in the ultimate instance to the Editor of Himal Southasian on all matters. Working with the Himal editorial team, the intern will fulfil responsibilities including:
● Update formatting SEO and other properties for stories in Himal’s archives
● Transcribe Himal’s podcasts for publication on the website
● Assist in subtitles for Himal’s YouTube content
● Find sources to verify the accuracy of what is published across a range of articles by seeking out information from all manner of sources
● Assist the editors with necessary research around any of the articles and newsletters under processing
● Stay current on political, social and cultural affairs across Southasia
● Helping with general website upkeep
● Provide support on other aspects of publication as needed
The ideal candidate will:
● Be a graduate student/early-career professional
● Demonstrate strong knowledge and interest in Southasian journalism and news
● Have a proven record of working well remotely and in small teams, meeting deadlines, taking initiative, and collaborating with people from a variety of social backgrounds
Prior experience working in communication roles linked to publication or media houses, or in community-building roles, will count as a plus.
This is a full-time paid internship position for a period of three months. Himal’s staff operate remotely from their respective bases across the region, with regular online communications following Southasian working hours.

Social Media intern
The Role
The intern will report to the Editor and the Managing Editor of Himal Southasian on all matters. Working with the Social Media Editor, the intern will fulfil responsibilities including:
● Content creation and research to promote Himal’s work on various social-media platforms, newsletters and other outreach channels.
● Create digital publicity and outreach materials, including posters, short videos, and event programmes.
● Work with the Engagement Editor and Social Media Editor to monitor and improve analytics and engagement.
● Stay current on political, social and cultural affairs across Southasia.
The ideal candidate will:
1. Be a graduate student/early-career professional
2. Demonstrate strong knowledge and interest in design and video, as well as a passion for clear writing
3. Show an interest in Southasian affairs, journalism, and news
4. Ideally have a proven record of working well remotely and in small teams, meeting deadlines, taking initiative, and collaborating with people from a variety of social backgrounds
5. Be familiar with software like Affinity Designer, Figma and Da Vinci Resolve or be willing to learn.

Video Editor and Producer
The Video Editor and Producer will report to the Editor of Himal Southasian on all matters.
The Role
We’re looking for a Video Editor and Podcast Producer to take ownership of our growing audio-visual output. This is a role for someone who's comfortable working independently, can manage production from recording to publishing, and cares about the kind of journalism Himal does. The bulk of your time will go toward producing and editing our regular podcasts. When there isn’t an episode in the pipeline, you’ll contribute to social media short-form video editing and ideation. You’ll work closely with our editorial team and may be the primary point of contact for guests at various stages of production.
What You’ll Do
Working with the Himal editorial team, the Video Editor and Producer will fulfil responsibilities including:
Podcast Production
- End-to-end production of recurring audiovisual podcasts like Southasia Review of Books, State of Southasia and occasional special episodes such as Footnotes or election specials
- Edit audio and video recordings for clarity, pacing, and quality. You will need to be proficient in colour correction, subtitling, noise reduction, levelling, graphics and sound design
- Coordinate with guests on scheduling, technical setup, and pre-recording logistics
- Take notes during recordings to capture key moments, quotes and episode highlights
- Use those notes to curate episode promos including short clips, audiograms, or social cuts that represent each episode well
- Manage episode publishing workflows via StreamYard and related platforms
Social Media and Short-Form Video
- Edit short-form video clips for Instagram, YouTube Shorts, and other platforms when podcast production allows
- Cut, caption, and format content to platform specs
Design and Visual Support
- Create or adapt graphics for episode covers, promotional assets, and social posts using Affinity Designer and Canva
What We're Looking For
The ideal candidate will have:
- 2–3 years of experience in podcast or video production, preferably in a media, journalism, or editorial environment
- Be confident working in DaVinci Resolve for video editing
- Experience with StreamYard for live or recorded sessions is a plus
- Familiarity with Affinity Designer and Canva for production graphics
- Strong ear for pacing and narrative in audio editing
- Ability to take production notes and translate them into engaging promo content
- Comfortable coordinating with guests and external collaborators professionally
- Self-directed and reliable working remotely. You should be able to manage multiple edits at different stages simultaneously
- Motion graphics skills are a plus
- Genuine interest in Southasian politics, culture, and current affairs is a prerequisite
