Kanak Mani Dixit

kanakmanidixitKanak Mani Dixit, Editor and Publisher of Himal Southasian, was born in Patan Dhoka, Lalitpur, Nepal, in January 1956. He attended St Xavier’s School in the Kathmandu Valley, from where he graduated in 1971. His later studies include a bachelors from Tri Chandra College in Kathmandu, a Law degree from Delhi University, and two Masters degrees, in International Affairs and in Journalism, from Columbia University. Dixit married Shanta Basnet in 1980, and the couple moved to New York that same year for studies. Dixit worked in the United Nations Secretariat in New York City from 1982 to 1990, and started Himal magazine during that time. He resigned from his position at the UN after Shanta finished her PhD in Public Health at Columbia University, and the two returned with their two children to Kathmandu in 1990. Since then, Dixit has been involved in Himal  Southasian and Nepali journalism, writing for children, documentary film festivals, civil rights, accountability, archiving, and animal welfare.
